In 2008, the North West Regional Fisheries Board commissioned Tourist Development International to prepare a Feasibility Study for proposed Salmon Life Centre in Ballina, Co. Mayo. The study recommended that Ballina position itself as the ‘Salmon Capital of Ireland’. In order to underpin this proposal, Tourism Development International recommended that a ‘Salmon Quarter’ be created in Ballina’s town centre.
